Diversey Care Opens Renewed Research Laboratory in Utrecht

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

Utrecht, the Netherlands—3 June 2014—Diversey Care, a Division of Sealed Air, today officially reopened and extended its advanced Research & Development Laboratory in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The company—a global leader in food safety and security, facility hygiene and product protection—has invested a multi-million euro sum in the new facilities. Utrecht will now be Diversey Care’s lead global innovation centre, developing sustainable integrated systems for the hygiene and cleaning industry using chemicals and dosing equipment. It will also offer specialist expertise, resources and support to the organisation’s other research facilities throughout Europe and beyond.

The company has operated an R&D lab in Utrecht since 1968, providing optimum facilities for often ground-breaking research in the fields of hygiene, food safety, fabric care and infection control. These include concentrates, low-temperature fabric care solutions and closed-loop dispensing systems, such as SafePack and Revoflow – both systems protected by multiple patents. Award-winning innovations such as Suma Combi, winner of the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Award 2014, have also been developed in Utrecht.

These recent innovations build on an impressive legacy – the first formulations specifically developed for automatic dosing were developed just after the site first opened; it also led development in the Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate-free formulations as Diversey Care became the first company to move away from these ingredients; it developed the first range of “super concentrates”†to reduce packaging and improve the environmental footprint; and developed Sensisept - a ground-breaking, patented, hand disinfectant with the efficacy of alcohol and the mildness of a hand cream.

Exemplifying this today, the company announced investment into new research on applications dedicated to heath care, food service, retail, hospitality and sustainable solutions using environmentally friendly solutions. In addition, Sealed Air scientists are currently working on the development of advanced control applications for the facilities management and building service contractors segment, with the first launches in the field shown at the ISSA Interclean show in Amsterdam, in May 2014.

To that end, Diversey Care has recruited new chemical, mechanical and design engineers to further strengthen the lab’s capabilities and expertise. With the addition of these new recruits, the workforce head-count in Utrecht exceeds 300 people.

The investment in the refurbishment and retooling of the Utrecht lab is further evidence of Sealed Air’s commitment to doing business in the Netherlands. The company also operates production facilities in Enschede and Nijmegen that are its largest in Europe. From those plants, packaging and hygiene solutions are exported to more than 50 countries globally.

“The laboratory provides our R&D professionals and solutions experts with an environment in which they can be at their most creative. With some of the very best tools and equipment available in the hygiene and cleaning industry, they can work collaboratively with customers and strategic partners to respond to their needs and meet the challenges of our industry in the coming years,” said Dr Ilham Kadri, President of Diversey Care.

“We are very happy with the commitment that Sealed Air is demonstrating with this investment in the Utrecht region specifically, and in the Netherlands in general,” said Guido Landheer, director of Top Sectors & Industrial Policy at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. ”R&D is a critical part of a nation’s weath and the opening of Sealed Air's expanded facilities in Utrecht confirms that our country continues to offer a highly conducive business environment for R&D and innovation.”

The opening of the new lab was attended by more than 100 customers, employees and special guests from national and regional government and diplomatic and education institutions.
